COLLECTIONS FOR "MEMORIES OF MSU" "Memories of MSU" a Sesquicentennial Exhibition at the Michigan State University Museum February 27 - December 30, 2005 Main and Heritage Galleries, MSU Museum
The Michigan State University Museum will present a landmark exhibition in 2005 highlighting the history and traditions of the university. The exhibit draws from rich collections -- objects, uniforms, equipment, furniture, photos and other holdings -- that trace the university's special land-grant heritage to today's engaged research center serving the people of Michigan and the world. At the center of the exhibit is student life -- from class rivalries to residence halls, fraternities and sororities, the bands, athletics and Sparty, and the colossal registration "pit." Academic origins and agricultural roots, campus architecture and culture, outreach and international programs, and visions of the 21st century university are also among the many reminiscences and remarkable stories that come together to create "Memories of MSU." "We invite the campus-community and Spartans from all around to join us in celebrating 150 years of history, culture and traditions, and looking forward to a future of advancing knowledge and transforming lives," says MSU Museum Director C. Kurt Dewhurst, a member of the university's sesquicentennial celebration planning committee.
Another exhibit will be installed in MSU Union north lounge in the spring: "Town and Gown" will focus on the special relationship between the Lansing-East Lansing communities (the "town") and the campus (the graduation "gown."), with subjects like "Mail before e-mail," "On the Avenue: Hangouts and Hot Spots" and "Stepping off Campus: Students and the Community."
