Michigan State University Historic North Campus Tour

Self-Guided, Walking Tour
Approx. Time: 1-1 1/2 hours
Visitor Parking: Spartan Stadium (Lot 62), Corner of Red Cedar and Chestnut roads

A great five-senses, indoor-outdoor itinerary for historic north campus at MSU!

Sparty Statue

Photo op! "The Spartan" Statue, at the intersection of Kalamazoo Street and Red Cedar Road. Sparty is one of the largest free standing ceramic figures in the world. The original terra cotta sculpture has been moved indoors, but a bronze replica is out on display. http://www.msuspartans.com/trads/msu-trads-sparty.html

Cross the Red Cedar River and walk east along the river trail to the W.J. Beal Botanical Garden, outdoor laboratory for the study and appreciation of plants -- with more than 2,000 different plant species. Also see a historical marker by MSU Campus Parks and Planning describing Beal's work. http://www.cpa.msu.edu/beal/

Across West Circle Drive you may hear the soaring sounds from music students practicing in the College of Music. Head east and see Beaumont Tower.

Beaumont Tower

Photo op! Beaumont Tower is an MSU landmark, commemorating Old College Hall, the site where agriculture was first taught as a science. Beaumont Tower is also the location of the State of Michigan's first Historical Marker. Beaumont Tower also houses a carillon with 49 bells and passers by will frequently hear performances - including the MSU fight song! https://www.msu.edu/~carillon/beaumont.htm

Right next door is the Michigan State University Museum, Michigan's first Smithsonian affiliate and the state's natural history and culture museum. The MSU Museum features three floors of exhibitions exploring the wonders of the world and world cultures. http://museum.msu.edu

Also see a historical marker produced by MSU Campus Parks and Planning describing a recent campus archaeology project excavating the site of MSU's first residence hall, dubbed "Saints' Rest" -- immediately east of the museum building -- which burned in the late 1876.

Now walk north across Adams Field, crossing West Circle Drive's north loop, to the MSU Union building and MSU Dairy Store for some signature MSU-made ice cream in 20 flavors! http://www.hfs.msu.edu/union/dining/union_square.html

More to do:

Take home some of the Spartan Experience - visit the Spartan Spirit Shop in the MSU Union for MSU apparel and merchandise. The MSU Museum Store also features Michigan-made gifts, jewelry and educational toys.

Feed the ducks - back across the Red Cedar River footbridge, next to the MSU Main Library. The rapids are a favorite spot for MSU's resident ducks.

Head back west, along the river trail back to your car.
