According to the donor:
The quilt back was dyed using tree bark, in an open kettle. The back was spun from cotton into thread and then woven on a loom by my great-grandmother, Mary Narcissus (Wheeler) Kirby in Jackson County (then became Putnam County) Tennessee about 1870-90. As my mother recalled the story to me. Mother died at age 100 in 2005.
Tenessee was wild country, inhabited by Indians when the family migrated from North Carolina.
