The project was started in February of 1983 as a joint effort of 4-H and the MSU Museum Folk Arts Division. It's purpose was to promote the Folkpatterns project by getting 4-H leaders and members to work together on a quilting bee commemorating the counties of Michigan and the activities of 4-H. One square was made by the 4-H leader or representative of each of the 60 counties. They were sewn together and the actual quilting of the piece was started at the Museum during 4-H Youth Exploration Days at Michigan State University, June 22-24, 1983.
