    Honoring individuals who continue traditions with excellence is the focus of two annual programs coordinated by the Michigan State University Museum:  the Michigan Heritage Awards (MHA) Program, and the Michigan Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program (MTAAP). Nominations for 2012 awards and applications for the apprenticeship grants are due Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011. 2012 Michigan Heritage Awards:

    In honor of Armistice Day, now called Veterans Day, the MSU Museum presents a  display of World War I posters. The signing of the armistice ending hostilities on the Western Front occurred at 11 a.m. (the eleventh hour) of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918. After World War II, the name was changed to Veterans Day to honor all members of the armed forces who were killed during wartime. Later in 1953 it was expanded to honor all vets.

    The 2011 Midwest Archaeological Conference, Inc. (MAC) Distinguished Career Award has been conferred upon Curator and Professor William A. Lovis of the Michigan State University Museum and Department of Anthropology. The annual award recognizes a senior archaeologist who has participated in archaeology for a substantial part of their career,

    The Michigan State University Museum, the Residential College in the Arts and the Humanities, the LBGT Resource Center and the Consulate of Mexico in Detroit are hosting a Day of the Dead celebration today through Nov. 4 at Michigan State University.

    MICHIGAN'S HARVEST: FOOD, FARMING AND COMMUNITY   Macomb Community College's Lorenzo Cultural Center, in Clinton Township, Mich., features three MSU Museum-produced exhibits on agricultural fairs in America. The Michigan Harvest program explores the influences and experiences that shape community heritage, examining topics from a variety of perspectives and creating interactive opportunities for learning, celebration and entertainment.

    Michigan State University Museum Curator of Folklife and Cultural Heritage C. Kurt Dewhurst has been named a fellow of the American Folklore Society (AFS), demonstrating outstanding accomplishments and making important contributions to the field of folklore.

    MSU MUSEUM PRESENTS NEW PHOTO EXHIBIT IN 'MASK' SERIES SUNDAY, OCT. 23   "On Death and Horses and Other People," featuring images by Czech photographer Markéta Luskacová, opens Oct. 23 in the Heritage Gallery and runs through Jan. 18, 2012. An opening reception is set for Sunday Oct. 23, at 2 p.m.
