Michigan Stained Glass Census

The Music Window in the Brueckner Museum at Starr Commonwealth is a tribute to the important role of music throughout history. Three scenes that represent different eras and instruments are explained through inscriptions. The scene at the top depicts an Athenian boy of the fifth century receiving a lesson on the lyre from his instructor; the middle scene shows an organist at a 14th-century church organ, with a boy operating the bellows; the scene below pictures three musicians playing American folk music on the guitar, banjo and piano.

The Brueckner Museum was built in the 1950s for Starr Commonwealth, which was founded by Floyd Starr in 1913 as a home for boys. The Music Window, a memorial to Herman S. Lucas, was created in 1956 by the Boston studio of Wilbur Herbert Burnham. To view another window in the Brueckner Museum, visit the Window of the Month for November 1998.
