| Clarence Fountain and the Blind Boys of Alabama have been singing God's praise for over 50 years. As Clarence says of their performing style, "We didn't come looking for God - we brought him with us." | ||||||
| Since they formed in the early 1940's when they were schoolmates at Alabama's Taladega Institute for the Deaf and Blind, the Blind Boys have traveled the distance - from playing small tent shows to picking up three Grammy nominations. They've earned the nickname "house-wreckers" in recognition of their ability to "shout" the church by stirring their listeners into states of spiritual ecstasy. Current members Clarence Fountain, Jimmy Carter and George Scott are outstanding veterans of quartet singing and have been with the group since its early days. The Blind Boys' brand of gospel harmony singing has its roots in 19th century minstrelsy and black college vocal ensembles and the "jubilee" quartets that were especially popular in the 1930's. Their music represents the "gospel" quartet style which evolved in the 1940's, incorporating black urban gospel, "sanctified" music of Pentecostal and Holiness churches and a more driving rhythm. The Blind Boys of Alabama were "discovered" by wider audiences in 1987 when they appeared with Morgan Freeman in the Obie-winning musical "Gospel at Colonus," an adaptation of the Greek tragedy "Oedipus at Colonus." In 1994, the group was awarded the National Heritage Fellowship by the National Endowment for the Arts. During a half century of concertising, they've "brought the house down" all over the world. As the Victoria, British Columbia, Times wrote of a recent concert performance there, "the sold-outºhouse was shaking in a frenzy of singing, clapping, stomping and dancing in the aisles." Nobody can do it like the Blind Boys.
