| BR 5-49 is the hottest band to come out of Nashville in many years. The group plays a mix of country classics and original tunes with an intensity, drive and sense of humor rare in the business. | |||||
| Oh, yes, the group takes its name from Junior Samples' used car advertisement spiel on HeeHaw. BR5-49 consists of five young country musicians who grew up listening to classic country and rockabilly music. The band plays a combination of truthful renditions of favorites by such legends as Bob Wills, Hank Williams, Sr., Faron Young, Carl Perkins, Webb Pierce, Johnny Horton and Elvis Presley, mixed in with originals that are obviously lyrically alternative but so rooted in the same classic music that many folks don't realize they're new songs. It all started in 1994 when lead singers Chuck Mead and Gary Bennett started playing together at Robert's Western World, a boot and western apparel store moonlighting as a music club, just around the corner from the historic Ryman Auditorium in downtown Nashville. Mead and Bennett, both guitarists, quickly brought in "Hawk" Shaw Wilson on drums, "Smilin'" Jay McDowell on bass and Donnie Heron, who can play anything with strings, and the magic began. BR5-49 no longer regularly plays at Robert's Western Wear. Since the release of their 1996 self-titled debut album, they've become too busy with touring and recording to hold down a regular gig. But their original mission hasn't changed - to have fun while maintaining the integrity of the classic country music they love. This combination has endeared them to audiences across Europe and Japan as well as the U.S. and gained them numerous awards including two Nashville Music Awards, a British Country Music Award and a Billboard Music Video Award.
