Wayne Gorbea & Salsa Picante

Bronx-style salsa

"Real" salsa lives - especially in one of its original spawning grounds, the Bronx, where Wayne Gorbea and Salsa Picante continue to play uncut, funky, irresistibly danceable Bronx-style salsa. Beginning in the 1920's, an Afro-Cuban music that came to be called "salsa" was evolving in Cuba, Puerto Rico and the rich, multi-cultural soil of New York City. Distinct local styles emerged and flourished through the mid-80's. By the 90's, a rather homogenized style called "salsa romatica" came to dominate mainstream recording and radio airplay. But Wayne and his band kept on playing hard-driving, trombone-propelled, Bronx-style salsa, attaining almost legendary status with local dancers and salsa aficionados worldwide. Bandleader, piano player, arranger and producer Wayne Gorbea, once dubbed "the Bronx's best-kept secret," was born and raised in the Bronx. He and his red-hot band, Salsa Picante, offer up a swinging, barrio salsa that dancers love to groove to. His mission, in fact, is to get you to dance. As Wayne puts it, "We want to relax, enjoy ourselves and become one with the dancers." The members of his band, Salsa Picante, are all veteran musicians who are well known in the clubs and recording studios of New York City. In the brass section, Christian Kollar and musical director Rick Davies are on trombones with Kevin Bryan on trumpet. The group's talented sonero is Frank Otero, with backup vocals provided by Wayne and other band members on clavo and coro. The rhythm section includes Rickie Sanquintin on bass; timbales player Ruben Borgas; Juan Rodriguez on bongo; and Frank Reyes on conga.
