| J.P. Cormier first gained U.S. recognition for his work as a highly regarded sideman for country music stars as well as his many appearances on the Grand Ole Opry. | ||||||
| But in the last five years he has focused on, and won accolades for, playing the music of his Nova Scotia home on Cape Breton Island. The distinctive music of Cape Breton combines the techniques of early French settlers with the violin style of Scottish Highlanders who arrived in the early 1800's. J.P. Cormier is one of this style's finest performers. A gifted multi-instrumentalist, he has won U.S. and Canadian guitar, fiddle, and banjo championships, and he is also a virtuoso on the mandolin as well as a composer and singer. His exceptional talent was obvious by the time he was five years old. At 16, he was already on the road as a professional musician. After a decade of that life, he met celebrated Nova Scotia pianist Hilda Chiasson. While still living in Nashville in the fall of 1994, J.P. and Hilda recorded a CD of Cape Breton fiddle music entitled Return to the Cape, a project that marked a major change in his musical direction. J.P. returned home to the Maritimes to play the music he grew up on and to concentrate on his own song writing. Since then, he has released two acclaimed recordings, Another Morning (1997) and Heart and Soul (1998). He was named Roots/Traditional Vocalist of the Year at the 1998 East Coast Music Awards and received a JUNO nomination in the Roots/Traditional Album/Solo category. J.P.'s recent festival and tour appearances include the Cape Breton Connections tour of England and Scotland and the Celtic Colors International Festival. As gospel recording artist Jerry Sullivan puts it, "One in a million has the giftºJ.P. plays eight instruments and sings with a virtuosity that seems impossible for one man to possess." He will appear in East Lansing with his wife, noted traditional piano player and step dancer Hilda Chiasson-Cormier.
