| No band in Irish music today has risen faster and farther in such a short time than Solás. Formed a little more than four years ago, Solás has quickly become the supergroup of Irish traditional music. | |||||
| The quintet was almost immediately declared by The Wall Street Journal's Earle Hitchner to be "among the most exciting Irish bands anywhere in the world." The excitement has continued to build since then, with three acclaimed albums, three consecutive Association for Independent Music (AFIM) awards for "Best Celtic recording" and rave reviews from audiences around the country. Solás showcases the extraordinary skills of Seámus Egan playing flute, tin whistle, mandolin, and tenor banjo - he's an All-Ireland champion on each - as well as on low whistle, nylon-string guitar, bodhrán, and uilleann pipes. Born in Philadelphia, raised for a time in Co. Mayo, Ireland, Seámus has three solo recordings, scored the film The Brothers McMullen and performed on the soundtrack for the movie Dead Man Walking. Fiddler Winifred Horan is a native New Yorker. A Junior All-Ireland Fiddle Champion (who is also a nine-time Irish stepdancing champion), she went on to study at the New England Conservatory of Music. She is a former member of the Sharon Shannon Band and Cherish the Ladies. Button accordionist Mick McAuley was born in Callan, Co. Kilkenny. Considered one of Ireland's finest box players, Mick joined Solás in 1997, where, besides accordion, he plays concertina and low whistles. Dublin-born John Doyle is an innovative guitarist whose style is widely imitated and one of today's most in-demand Irish musicians. Deirdre Scanlon, from Tipperary, is the newest member of the group. She has released a solo album in Ireland where she is considered one of the best of a new generation of Irish singers.
