The Olde Michigan Ruffwater String Band

Old-time stringband
Hailing from the Rochester, Michigan, area and formed 22 years ago, the Olde Michigan Ruffwater String Band is a veritable institution, a hands-down favorite of contra and square dancers around the state.
Their sound prominently features the hammered dulcimer, an instrument which arrived in the early 1800's with those who came to work in Michigan's burgeoning logging industry. Ruffwater's musical repertoire spins from the traditional web with jigs, reels and hornpipes from the British Isles, breakdowns from southern Appalachia, old polkas, waltzes and schottisches from 19th century parlor songs, Michigan songs from the lumbering and sailing ship era, Georgia stringband songs of the 1920's, Bob Wills' favorites of the 1930's, and six-part gospel songs from folk and old-time traditions. Their band members sport many original compositions that can be found in traditional publications, organizations and dance camps around the world. The group features the "lumberjack's piano" (hammered dulcimer), fiddle, banjo-mandolin, recorder and accordion as lead instruments. Spoons, guitar, tenor banjo, bass and piano provide percussion, rhythm and bass. Their workshops are just as fun-filled as their dances and concerts, and they'll be doing all of these things at the National Folk Festival. In addition, the group will be joined by a very special guest, the great Michigan old-time fiddler Les Raber.
