| Harmonia is a seven-piece ensemble based in Cleveland. It is composed of musicians from Romania, Croatia, Ukraine and the United States who perform traditional folk music from Eastern Europe. | ||||||
| There's a great richness of musical forms in the region between the Carpathian Mountains and the Danube and in the Balkan region, such as the csardas, halgato, kolomyjka, doina, hora and invirtita . Harmonia's repertoire reflects the cultures of this region: Hungarian, Slovak, Ukrainian, Romanian, and Rom, among others. Performing on traditional instruments, Harmonia's music is drawn from both the urban and rural traditions of Eastern Europe. The ensemble's performances combine virtuosity with soulful melancholy. Harmonia was formed 1992 by Walt Mahovlich who is Croatian/Hungarian. The musicians in the group come from varied East European backgrounds, but in Harmonia find a common musical language. While firmly grounded in tradition, they are building something new upon this foundation, composing and performing their own material. For both romance and exciting improvisation, be sure to catch one of Harmonia's dizzying performances at this year's National Folk Festival. Harmonia's participation has been made possible by the Global Sound, Heartland Beats program of Arts Midwest which is supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
