Inca Son
Music and dance of the Andes
Inca Son plays music from the Andes of Peru and other regions of Latin America. The group performs both traditional songs and original compositions, and the musicians make most of their own instruments by hand. Its mission is to introduce and share the riches of traditional Andean culture, and they accomplish this with colorful authentic Andean attire, skillful musicianship, dance presentations, and sharing their knowledge of Andean folklore. Inca Son was founded in 1989 by musician César Villalobos, the oldest of 13 children from a tiny village in northern Peru. He participated in local music and dance events as a child, and in 1968 his family's poverty inspired him to dream about other countries where he could work hard and earn more money for his village. In 1985 he came to the United States, where he taught traditional dance first in California and then across the entire country. He has traveled to Mexico and Canada, and he has lectured at Harvard University on Andean music, Afro-Peruvian music, and the dances of the Andes Mountain region and the coastal areas of Peru. Inca Son contributed to the score of the PBS series Columbus and the Age of Discovery, launched The Year of the World Indigenous People at the United Nations, and has performed at Carnegie Hall, World Cup Soccer events, the Atlanta Olympics, and numerous international festivals. In 1999, Inca Son was the winner of the Boston Music Awards' "Outstanding World Music Act." Several songs from their last three recordings have become hits in Peru.
