Sault Ste. Marie (Chippewa County)
regalia clothing
Edythe, (“Edye”) Nichols, of Ojibwe and French descent, is a
member of the Sault Ste. Marie tribe of Chippewa Indians. She is known in
Native American communities as a master regalia clothing designer and maker.
She has made regalia and clothing for over 30 years for cultural activities
and events, such as pow wows, funerals and community feasts, for which traditional
clothing is needed. After taking her own daughters to pow wows and making
their regalia, she learned from many elders, sharing and learning as she
traveled all over Ojibwe country. Edye chose Elaine Young-Clement, a cultural
training specialist for the tribe, as her apprentice. Elaine already had
been making some regalia for her family but wanted to learn more techniques
and master the skills. Both Edye and Elaine take part in educational programming
for tribal members and culture camps for youth. |
