Indian corn making
George Martin, a member of the Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior
Ojibwa, is an experienced traditional dancer and beadworker known for sharing
his culture, pow wow’ing, and cooking. He learned the tradition of
Indian corn-making over fifty years from his mother-in-law, helping pound
black ash logs and watching her process Indian corn and cook. Traditional
corn soup is highly-valued and yet few people continue to make it the traditional
way George does with preparing the corn from start to finish— harvesting
the hardwood and making fires for ash, and selecting, curing, shucking,
boiling, washing, drying and storing the corn. George’s apprentice
is his grandson, Paul Shananaquet, also an experienced culture-bearer. Paul
sees “… this tradition not being taken up by anyone my age and
I feel that it is my responsibility to learn from him.” |
