Michigan Barn & Farmstead Survey
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Volunteers are surveying barns and farmsteads in their community as part of this
documentation project. The survey is fun to do! It involves driving all the roads
in a township, taking photographs of the barns you see, and filling out a survey
form for each farmstead.
The Michigan Barn and Farmstead Survey is funded in part by,
HOW TO SIGN UP FOR THE PROJECT
- Check to see if the survey has been done in the township and county you
wish to survey;
- Choose the county and township you wish to survey;
- Email a coordinator to register
for that county and township.
(Coordinator will send you a confirmation);
- Purchase a copy of Michigan Barn and Farmstead Survey Manual
by Steve Stier.

- Begin your survey. (Training sessions may be available in your area.
Check with LuAnne Kozma to request
a training session.)
- Compile all photos and survey forms. Make a duplicate set for your own organization
or local library, museum, or archive.
- Send your survey results including photographs to:

List of Michigan Counties
Click on the county, then on the township you wish
to survey.
The list will indicate if:
- the township has already been surveyed;
- an individual or group is currently surveying the
township;
- the township is available to be surveyed.
