Martian Design Studio: Planning for Life on Mars

In February 2018, students from Lansing’s Information Technology Empowerment Center’s (ITEC) 2020 Girls Program began exploring the possibilities of living on Mars. ITEC is a nonprofit organization working with students and families in Michigan to build excitement for coursework and careers in science, technology, engineering and math. Working with staff members from the MSU Museum and MSU’s Abrams Planetarium, students in grades 7-9 learned about space travel and the physical characteristics of Mars, human physical and social needs for living in communities, and how to create 2D and 3D drawings using computer-aided design software.

The Martian Design Studio showcases the 2020 Girls’ design process and how they answered the question “What might life be like on Mars when humans build communities there?”

Join us at the MSU Museum, on Saturday, April 14 from noon – 3:00 p.m., during Michigan State University’s Science Festival for a tour of this Martian City exhibit with the 7 – 9th grade students that imagined it.
