SUMMARY:Indonesian Shadow Puppets (Wayang)
DESCRIPTION:Wayang is the Bahasa word for the traditional art of shadow pup
petry\, a very rich and complex performance that narrates a heroic educati
onal story often derived from South Asian epics. Eddy Kuntjoro and Yono Ga
reng are the Indonesian artists in Jambi City who have prepared the wayang
for Palm Oil Pitfalls. They have adapted a classic story for the contempo
rary situation\, preparing a script for a performance that takes palm oil
as its central topic. Eddy\, Yono\, and their team made the puppets especi
ally for this performance and composed the music. The puppet theatre perfo
rmance will be presented on stage at their studio and video recorded for t
he program at MSU.\n\nGlobal Studies in the Arts and Humanities at MSU org
anized Palm Oil Pitfalls in collaboration with the International Center at
the National Islamic University Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi (Indonesia)
and with the support of the Muslim Studies Program and the Asian Studies
