SUMMARY:(SOLD OUT) Techno Futures: Detroit's Afrofuturist Groove
DESCRIPTION:Join visionary artists Carl Craig and Mike Banks for an explora
tion of Detroit's pivotal role in shaping the Afrofuturist movement throug
h Techno music. This dynamic panel will delve into how the genre's innovat
ive sound and cultural roots reflect a futuristic vision of African diaspo
ra identity. Facilitated by Dr. Julian Chambliss\, this discussion will ex
plore the intersection of music\, technology\, and Afrofuturism\, highligh
ting the creative legacies of Detroit's Techno pioneers and their influenc
e on global music and culture.\n\nLivestream\n\nCarl Craig is a prominent
figure in the world of Electronic music\, particularly known for his work
in the Techno genre. Hailing from Detroit\, Michigan\, he is considered on
e of the key artists in the second wave of Detroit Techno during the late
1980s and 1990s. Craig has been influential in the genre\, both through hi
s own innovative productions and by fostering the careers of other artists
through his record label\, Planet E Communications.\nBeyond his direct co
ntributions to music production and DJing\, Craig has been involved in var
ious collaborations and projects across different genres and mediums. His
work often bridges the gap between Electronic music and other forms of art
\, such as performance and installation art. Craig’s influence and contr
ibutions to the electronic music scene\, particularly Detroit Techno\, hav
e made him a respected and seminal figure in the industry.\nMichael “Mad
Mike” Banks is a Detroit based innovator\, producer\, and advocate for
the city and its music and cultural legacy.  As the co-founder of Undergr
ound Resistance\, he has been at the forefront of the global Techno scene\
, while as co-founder of Submerge Distribution\, he has paved the way for
independent labels to retain ownership of their music while reaching a glo
bal audience.  In addition to this\, he has done extensive work in the de
velopment of the East Grand Boulevard corridor and served as a mentor to n
ot only Detroit musicians and artists\, but up and coming artists from aro
und the world as well.  Experienced in production and distribution\, deve
lopment and execution\, he has a documented track record of using that to
not just the benefit of self\, but many others as well.
