Freedom of Speech
Freedom of speech is the foundation of our communities and our nation. At the MSU Museum, we believe that our mission-driven exhibitions and public programming have the power to awe, illuminate, challenge, unsettle, provoke, and, at times, offend. The experiences we curate reflect a wide range of subjects and perspectives, offering insight into the complexities of the human experience. We are unwavering in our defense of the right to creative and intellectual expression, both within our institution and around the world, and we take pride in living in a country where these freedoms are constitutionally protected.
To exhibit a work, idea, or experience—whether through art, history, science, or culture—is not to endorse the ideas, values, or beliefs of its creators or participants. Rather, it affirms the right of all individuals to engage with diverse viewpoints and expressions. We recognize that exhibitions and programming can spark meaningful dialogue, and when controversies arise, we welcome open public discussion. Such discourse is essential to the full appreciation of what we present and a fundamental part of our civic duty.
In alignment with our firm commitment to freedom of speech, we will not censor exhibitions or program participants in response to political, social, or ideological pressures. Our role is to provide a platform for a wide spectrum of voices and visions, ensuring that the MSU Museum remains a space for exploration, reflection, and the free exchange of ideas.
The MSU Museum fully supports and upholds MSU’s institutional Statement on Free Speech, affirming the university’s commitment to open dialogue and the free exchange of ideas. Learn more about Freedom of Speech at MSU.
