Per Michigan State University policy, the Museum cannot simply accept a non-cash gift/donation (which a donation of a physical object would be considered). If the Museum chooses to accept the non-cash gift, a potential donor must do the following:

Register with MSU University Advancement as a Donor (if the potential donor is not already in the system)

If the gift is estimated to be valued at over $500, the Donor must complete and submit an Internal Revenue Form 8283, Noncash Charitable Contributions.

If the gift is estimated to be value at $5000 or more, the Donor must complete and submit an Internal Revenue Form 8283, Noncash Charitable Contributions and obtain a written appraisal from an independent, qualified appraiser. The appraisal must conform to current IRS guidelines. It is the donor's responsibility to secure, arrange and pay for appraisals of gift property.

Additional information can be found in the MSU Manual of Business Procedures Section 315.IV.

If you expect the item or items you intend to donate to be valued at $5000 or more, you may wish to learn the Collections Committee’s decision about your object before obtaining an appraisal. The Museum may ultimately not be able to accept the items you wish to donate and an appraisal is likely to have an associated fee.

MSU is committed to following the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA).

Do you acknowledge you have read, understand, and accept these terms?

Do you still wish to proceed knowing what would be required of you if the object donation is accepted and that the items you intend to donate may not be accepted by the Museum.
