Michigan State University is once again offering the Immersive Visualization Institute (IVI) Summer
Institute, an in-person program that provides graduate students and faculty with the opportunity to explore the pedagogical potential of large-scale immersive visualization platforms on campus. Applications are due by March 24, 20025 and the Institute will run June 2-5, 2025. Online applications are accepted here!
This competitive program will provide participants with hands-on experience using:
- The Abrams Planetarium
- The Digital Scholarship Lab 360 Room at MSU Libraries
- Science On a Sphere at the MSU Museum (Note: Due to ongoing renovations, Science On a Sphere will be explored through photos and videos, with opportunities for content display upon the Museum’s reopening in January 2026.)
Through this interdisciplinary program, IVI Graduate Fellows will investigate the strengths and limitations of each technology and how they can be used to represent complex visual narratives. They will also learn techniques for producing content for these platforms and explore creative and research-based applications for their own work. Each participant will develop a final project, which may be a teaching module, research study design, outreach program element, work of art, or other format.
“This institute is a unique opportunity for graduate students to experiment with cutting-edge visualization technologies and think creatively about how immersive media can transform teaching, research, and engagement,” said Carrie Wicker, co-convener of the IVI Summer Institute and MSU Museum educator. “Whether you are a scientist, an artist, or historian, these tools open up new ways to communicate complex ideas and make learning more dynamic.”
Graduate students from all disciplines are invited to apply individually or with a faculty mentor. Selection is competitive and limited to 15 students. Participants must be enrolled for Summer 2025 and will receive a $500 stipend.
