Marking Time: A Year of Spartan Marching Band Traditions

The past meets the present in the MSU Museum’s latest exhibition, “Marking Time: A Year of Spartan Marching Band Traditions.” Curated by the Curatorial Practices class in the Arts and Cultural Management – Museum Studies program, the exhibition showcases artifacts, photographs, and multimedia presentations that illuminate the evolution of the band over the years. Professor Suzanne Fischer, leading the Curatorial Practices class, expressed her enthusiasm for this collaborative endeavor stating, “I’m excited to have the opportunity to collaborate with the MSU Museum and utilize this collection, a great resource on campus. Working with the MSU Museum’s collection allows students to explore the MSU Marching Band history more deeply and purposefully through hands-on learning with artifacts.”

This exhibition highlights one of Michigan State University’s most cherished organizations through a year in the life of its traditions. From auditions to postseason performances, “Marking Time” provides a behind-the-scenes look at the rich history and enduring traditions that have shaped the Spartan Marching Band into the beloved institution it is today.

Morgan Schwarz, MSU student, Curatorial Practices class member, and Spartan Marching Band trumpet player stated, “Working closely with the MSU Museum’s collection, this exhibition offers a unique opportunity to delve into the Spartan Marching Band’s history. From handling artifacts to uncovering stories, this exhibition not only celebrates our traditions but also deepens our understanding of the legacy we carry forward.”

“Marking Time” will give visitors insights into the band’s traditions, rituals, and camaraderie, while also discovering the dedication and passion that drive its members to excellence both on and off the field. Whether you’re a die-hard fan, an alum reminiscing about your time in the band, or simply curious about MSU’s musical heritage, this exhibition promises to offer something for everyone.
