Natural science collections are often viewed as static archives of preserved animals—remnants of the past stored away in museum cabinets. Yet behind every specimen lies a story of scientific discovery, changing landscapes, human curiosity, exploration, and the evolving relationship between people and the natural world. This exhibition invites visitors to look beyond the specimen itself and uncover the hidden stories preserved within museum collections.

Drawn from the vertebrate collections of the MSU Museum, the exhibition showcases specimens spanning centuries, continents, ecosystems, and preservation methods. Some specimens reveal what Michigan landscapes looked like before urbanization and environmental change. Others document species collected during expeditions around the world or preserve biological information that can now be studied using technologies unimaginable when they were first collected. Together, these specimens demonstrate that museum collections are far more than historical curiosities — they are living scientific archives that continue to grow in value and relevance over time to teaching, learning, and research.
